2nd Arrondissement
Bourse, Sentier, the passages couverts — Paris's smallest and one of its least residential arrondissements, but full of converted buildings that weren't originally built as homes.
Why it's different here
A lot of the 2nd was built for the textile and garment trade, not for living in — Sentier in particular is full of old workshops and wholesale spaces that have since been converted into apartments, startups, and small offices. That conversion history means plumbing that was often added or extended after the fact, rather than planned in from the start.
Who calls us here
The 2nd has one of the highest concentrations of small offices and startups in Paris, alongside a growing number of people living in converted loft-style apartments. We hear from both — a startup dealing with a shared building issue during office hours, and residents in a converted space where the plumbing doesn't quite follow the layout you'd expect.

What tends to come up
Retrofitted plumbing in a building that wasn't originally residential tends to show up in a few specific ways:
When a workshop becomes several flats, plumbing sometimes gets extended in ways that make sense on paper but are awkward to access in practice.
Buildings that have functioned as offices or workshops for decades often have hot water systems that were sized for a different kind of use than today's.
A number of small restaurants and cafés share older drainage — see Blocked Drain if that sounds familiar.

Yes, alongside residential flats. Just let us know it's an office when you call so the plumber knows what to expect on arrival.
Not for a plumber who's used to it, which is exactly the kind of building we see a lot of in the 2nd. It just means being ready for a less standard layout.
